Governor Brown Releases Devastating May Revision Proposal

Governor Brown released what he called the State’s ” day of reckoning” May Revision. Included in the May Revision proposal was a continued call for devastating cuts to child care and a realignment of child care administration to county welfare departments. The Governor’s May Revision proposes to achieve a total child care savings of $452.5 million in non-prop 98 general fund (including Stage 1).

Twenty one staff from state funded child development programs have qualified for a 2012 AB212 Stipend. In addition to their work with young children they have taken at least 3 units of ECE coursework toward earning their AA or BA degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development. SUN, SOIL, WATER AND AIR Prek & K Staff Workshop

All PreK, Kindergarten and After School staff are invited to join us on Saturday June 2, 2012 from 9:00 – 2:30 at Mitchell Park Senior Center, 1455 Santa Rosa St. SLO for a science workshop with the Banana Slugs String Band. Music is an effective teaching tool to introduce and reinforce concepts, as well as to inspire and motivate students in this whole language approach to teaching. The Banana Slugs String band integrates music, poetry, drama and movement with hands-on science. Participants will learn strategies for creating thematic science units and gain ideas to energize and supplement their existing units. Join us and come ready to dance the Water Cycle Boogie, become a tree and throw a cycle frisbee. The $10.00 registration fee includes lunch.

This workshop is sponsored by the San Luis Obispo County Child Care Planning Council. For more information, contact Chery Scollan at 782-7285. Seating is limited and will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Please mail payment and registration information no later than May 25.

The workshop will be followed by a FREE Rock the Park family concert with the Banana Slugs String Band from 4:00 – 5:00 in Mitchell Park.

The award winning children’s eco-music band, the Banana Slugs String Band, will perform a free concert for the whole family on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Mitchell Park (Osos & Pismo) in downtown San Luis Obispo from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Join us for outrageously good music and interactive fun that inspires children and their families to learn about our precious earth. Saving Our Children – and Ourselves – Through Nature with Richard Louv

Orfalea Foundation co-founder Natalie Orfalea will interview Richard Louv, author of the bestselling Last Child in the Woods, during a free-to-the-public event at the Granada Theater in Santa Barbara on Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 PM.

The event, titled “Saving Our Children – and Ourselves – Through Nature”, will include a brief presentation by Louv, followed by the interview, and concluding with an audience question-and-answer session. Louv’s books will be available for purchase and signing after the event. The event is presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures, the Orfalea Foundation, and the Wilderness Youth Project, in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
