According
to the 2000 Needs Assessment, the average yearly cost for one child
in a licensed center was $5,220 a year. That cost
represents 14% of median income at that time ($37,380); and 45% of
a minimum wage income ($11,960). The median income in
San Luis Obispo increased to $48,000, according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, UCSB Economic Outlook 2001 Report. As of
January 2002, the minimum wage increased in California to $6.75/hour.
The attached table shows
the average annual cost for one
child in care, by type of care and setting (Family Child Care Home
or Child Care Center), and the percent of income required to
pay for a family earning the median income ($48,000) and a family
earning minimum wage ($14,040), based on UCSB Economic
Outlook figures and the 2001 Child Care Supply Survey.More
